You can try to do it just by yourself.. but if the toothbrush can help you? The Xiaomi Mijia Sonic Electric Toothbrush will tell you exactly what you need to do! TomTop offered us this model for a review.

Pros and Cons

Upsides Downsides
  • Design
  • Good Brushing Modes
  • Only In Chinese
  • Just One Brush Head Included
  • No Charger Included

Sleek Design

As always, the design of the Xiaomi Mi Home Sonic Electric Toothbrush is excellent. Its a bit larger than other toothbrushes, but this is obviously no actual problem. You will find three white LED lights at the front which indicate the brushing mode. A fourth blue LED light indicates the charging mode or Bluetooth connection.

Above the lights you will find a grey one option button for putting on, switchings modes, putting off, and Bluetooth connectivity. The backside of the handle got a dotted structure, to hold grip.

Brush Options

The toothbrush got three different brush options, powerful, gentle, and with care. Just hit the power button once more to switch to the next mode. Each mode got their own LED
light. You will need to use those modes in a certain way to get a good score with the app.

The Package? We Missed Some Stuff

Of course, you can brush right away. However, there are a few things that we were missing.

– Toothbrush Handle
– Power Shaft Protective Cover
– Color Ring
– Charging Base
– Brush Head
– Brush Protection Cover
– (Chinese) User Manual

As you can see, you will only get one toothbrush head. So if your household is larger than one you will need to share.

New Sonic toothbrush heads will cost you approx around $16-$20 dollars for three.

Next to that, you can charge the toothbrush with a regular looking charger. However, it only got a USB wire attached. The package does not include a plug charger. Which is a bit annoying, every machine nowadays needs one so you probably don’t have a good looking free for continued use of the toothbrush.

And last, there is no international or English manual. It is only in Chinese. For some people, this is not necessary, but it is a bit awkward.

Do You Know Chinese? You Will Need That For The App

Just like the manual is the App also only available in Chinese. The Xiaomi Mi Home app is available in English. But this is only working on certain devices and not for the DDYS01SKS Toothbrush (at the time of writing).

How To Get The Xiaomi MiJia Sonic Toothbrush Working?

There are some difficulties to get the automatic toothbrush working appropriately. First of all the Xiaomi Mi App is available in different local services. In our case, the App told to use the U.S. server. However, when using this local server, you will not get it working. You will be able to find your device and try to update it. Nevertheless, we got stuck at 91% and never got any further.

You are able to change this at the settings and choose “Locale”. You will need to do this. Otherwise, the toothbrush will not function at all. So as much more mentioned you would need to choose “Mainland China”. This is no problem for the MiJia app itself (still available in English). But when you want to use the Sonic everything is in Chinese.

So to help you starting we translated the most important screens.

We Translated Some Menus For You

The Mijia Sonic interface translated from Chinese to English. At first, the overview screen when you click the Toothbrush in your Mi Home App.

This view got some statistics about your brushing habi. But, there is also one other important message. You need to dropdown/swipe down to synchronize. When you do this, the App will be looking for updates. Go to the three dots at the right top of your screen to open the options menu and update the firmware.

The next screen (when hitting the three dots) is your options screen. When you completed the earlier mentioned step, you will see a red dot behind one of the options. The red dot indicates that there is a new firmware update. Clicking and confirming it will upgrade your Xiaomi Sonic Toothbrush from 1.01 to 1.03.

When you go back to the start screen you can find two other important screens. One of them will show when you hit the heart icon in the right bottom (personal details). You can change some brushing options over here. Like your brushing timer, 2 minutes or 2.5 minutes. Your brush level (its a bit unclear what this actually does). And the “Prevent Off Sprinkle Option”, in the case you have toothpaste on the brush and putting it onto early.

The last screen will pop up when you click the “details” in the middle. Over here you can find your overall statistics about your brush session, and you can find your historical data.

Alternative Xiaomi Toothbrush Models

There are two main alternatives for the Xiaomi DDYS01SKS. The most famous one, Xiaomi Soocare X3 and the Xiaomi Oclean One.

Xiaomi Soocare X3 Review

A short video about the differences between the Xiaomi DDYS01SKS and the Soocare.

Xiaomi Oclean One>

The Oclean is a bit more expensive but will out perform the DDYS01SKS on performance. The battery duration time is 60 days, and a full charge will only cost 3.5 hours. Next, to that, it got a high-frequency of sonic vibrating 42000 strokes per minute.

Should We Buy It?

The choice for us is a bit twofold. The Xiaomi Mijia Toothbrush looks nice and works like expected. But the only Chinese working App, the missing charger, and only one toothbrush head are certainly arguments to not buy this device. Hopefully, they are working on an English/international App version. Because that will make this product far more user-friendly.
