Today, a special story about an Italian smartphone manufacturer, Stonex. They manufactured one model, which is called, ironically, The Stonex One Dante. This phone is already a somewhat older because it came out at the end of 2015. Lately, a few China stores picked it up and are selling it against a far better competitive price. So, this review is not about the newest features or the fastest specs. But, is this phone a good price to value deal.

We got this smartphone from China Shop, CNDirect, they are selling this phone for a few months. But you can also find on AliExpress with a slightly different name, Santin Dante (currently sold out). However, when you look for a case or cover, just search on AliExpress.

The package is simple but complete. You will find the phone (which is already a bit charged), together with a European charger and long USB cable for charging and connecting to other machines. Extra items are the large USB cable and the in-ear headphones. We tested the in-ear headphones a bit and came to the conclusion that you don’t need to buy this package especially for those 😉

Why Is The Stonex One Dante Interesting?

The story about Stonex One Dante is a bit weird. But in the end, we are actually pretty excited, especially if we compare it with a few alternatives further down. If we look at the specs it is certainly not a low rider. Of course we did a small AnTuTu benchmark test and the AnTuTu Score is 58119.

This score is remarkably high for a smartphone around the 100 dollar range. So what is in the specs causing this excellent rating.

Size

The One Dante is rather large, with 5.5 inches. If you like this is a personal thing, for me the phone is a bit too large to handle with one hand. On the other hand, watching photo’s or videos is more fun on a larger screen. Just be aware of its size. Next, to its size, it is also slightly heavy, compared to other smartphones. Because you can still easily take it into your pocket without getting tired 😉

Design

The design of the Stonex is obviously unusual. Its backside is ocean blue, together with all the buttons. The front glass is dark from edge to edge. If you switch it on you will see that the actual screen is smaller. This will create a good looking, but an exceptional smartphone. Which is more interesting for people who like to have a showy item.

On the front side you will find a front camera and the three regular Android control buttons. The back button on the left, the home button in the middle and the tab button on the right.

On the back side you will have a camera and a flashlight. On the top, you can connect the phone with a 3.5mm in ear plug and the mini USB connector. The USB connection is on top, where you should expect it at the bottom. On the left side, you will find a long stretched out volume button (in blue) and on the right side the power or unlock button.

Because everything on the Stonex One is blue or black it is hard to find the right button in a darker environment. Because you cannot see which part is the top or bottom, you are not able to find the unlock button. Not a big problem, but something which was a bit disturbing.

Battery

The battery capacity of this phone is rather large, 3000mAh. Regular phones have a capacity between 1500mAh to 3500mAh. There is no indication LED about the battery capacity left or other signs, like a new message, missed call or the phone is charging. A full charge takes about less than three hours on the charger.

Software/Firmware

If you don’t like Chinese Apps/Software/Firmware/Android Skin, you are at the right place. The Stonex One does not have any third-party software! . Which makes it an almost clean phone to start with. In this manner you can download just the apps you like and want.

A flaw is the Android version, that is just Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Camera

We are positively surprised by the camera of the Stonex. The 21MP rear camera is working great. Especially with the stock camera app, this has some nice features to take panorama pictures (360 pictures) and small picture movies. We took some to test it, and with the useful tooltips, it was super simple!

Bluetooth Version 4.0

The Bluetooth version of 4.0 is a bit limited because BT 4.1 is far better and more future directed (the iPhone 5 also uses Bluetooth 4.0).The major advantage for Bluetooth 4.1 is the reduced overlap with 4G, so they don’t interfere with each other. Next, to that 4.1 has a better configurable timeout period for connection.

Alternatives

In the price range about $100 dollar are a few good alternatives:

  • Doogee Y6
  • Outkitel U20
  • Xiaomi Redmi 4A

Beneath we will shortly point out the main differences with the Stonex One Dante.

Doogee Y6

AnTuTu Score is 36.500 (difference with Stonex is -21.619 points)

The Doogee Y6 is the same size with 5.5inch, the resolution is far lower, only 1280*720. It has a 3200mAh battery which is slightly larger, and its RAM+ROM is 2GB and 16GB. In comparison to the Stonex One which has 3G and 32GB. Both phones are compatible with 4G and make use of Bluetooth 4.0. They both use an Octa-core CPU. One significant positive difference for the Y6 is the Android version. It has 6.0 installed.

Outkitel U20

AnTuTu Score is 40.134 (difference with Stonex is -17.985 points)

The Oukitel U20 is almost identical to the Doogee Y6, the main difference is screen resolution, which is 1080*1920. However, the U20 got only a quad-core CPU and just 13MP rear camera.

Xiaomi Redmi 4A

AnTuTu Score is 36.127 (difference with Stonex is -21.992 points)

A somewhat smaller smartphone with just 5.0 inch. The screen resolution is also far lower, only 1280*720 pixels. This phone RAM+ROM is 2GB and 16GB but it is capable of a micro SD card up to 128GB. The Stonex cannot get SD cards larger than 64GB. The Redmi 4A only has quad core CPU and a similar battery capacity. Major advantages for this phone are the Bluetooth 4.1 version and Android 6.0

Is The Stonex One a Good Buy?

We think it certainly is! Of course, there are some downsides, also some major ones. But the total score, the software, the screen, and the price are excellent. We cannot offer any comparison because the Stonex One Dante is only available at CNDirect.
