This time a smartphone brand which is unknown to us, Cloudfone. It is a real budget phone for only $66 dollar (at the time of writing). So what can we expect? We were surprised 🙂

Cloudfone

Cloudfone an unknown brand in Europe, North-America, and even China. This brand focusses on the Philippines but is certainly not small. With more than 700.000 likes on Facebook . Besides the latter, they also partnered up with partners like NBA, Disney, Microsoft, Spotify. The brand is mainly focusing on the Philippines and they largely sell smartphones, but also offer featured phones and tablets.

Summary Of Pros and Cons

Upsides Downsides
  • Price

  • Anututu Score: 21638 (Price-Value)
  • Dual Sim
  • Disney?
  • Android 5.1
  • Plastic Housing
  • Only 3g

The Package

It all starts with the package you get. We were pleased how CNDirect delivers their packages. Everything came on time and in a good state. The box of the Cloudfone is small and not much special, but what do you want from a box? See the Cloudfone Exicte Prime model we tested.

The package is total, you got everything you need. The package includes a charger with USB cable, in-ear headphones, and a spare back side housing. The headphones and the back side are from Disney because of the special edition. To be honest, we are not overwhelmed by these specials, but it is maybe fun for younger children.

The Cloudfone Excite Prime

Design

The first impression of the Cloudfone is that it looks very similair to my regular phone, the Xiaomi Note 4 . The Excite Prime is only a bit smaller with 5.0 inch. A nice size for getting a large screen and still be easily manageable with one hand.

Screen & Front

The front side looks sophisticated, it even looks a bit better than the Xiaomi from this side. I think that is because the screen looks to be from edge to edge when not switched on. When you light it up you will see the edges of the screen behind the glass.

Connections and Buttons

At the top you will find the speaker, a camera, and an indicator light. A bit weird about this is the not symmetrical design. The light and camera are not neatly lined out against the speaker. At the bottom, you will find the regular Android buttons. From left to right; back, home, and overview. Androids phones differ in the order of this buttons, but I like this one the most. The back button on the left side.

When we look at the sides of the Excite. At the right top side, you will find the two main buttons, volume and unlock/lock. At the top, there is a 3.5mm audio plug, and at the bottom, you can charge your phone with a regular USB cable.

Back side, Housing & Inside

When we turn the smartphone around we immediately notice and feel the plastic housing. Not a problem of course, but other materials look sleeker. At the top, there is another camera and flashlight. Getting of the housing off is not a problem, not like other models they thought of a small notch to click the first part free.

When removing the housing you will feel that the material is vulnerable because of the plastic and the thickness is marginal. When opened we noticed that it is not possible to replace or remove the battery. Another thing we noticed and did not know on a forehand, the Cloudfone Excite Prime is a Dual Sim Card smarthpone. Which can be useful for many of us.

The LINE launcher is a handy app for configuring and maintaining your phone. Other apps are the Play Store, Spotify, YouTube and the Chrome browser. So in the end, the phone has some beneficial apps, and you will not find much crap merchandising or promotions apps.

Compare the Cloudfone Excite Prime

We compared the Cloudfone Excite with other smartphones in the same price range.

Oukitel U22

Antutu Score: 19.800

Pro’s for the Oukitel are the installed Android 7.0 version and the four cameras. Which is something special for a smartphone? It is slightly larger, 5.5 inch and has a larger battery of 2700mAh. The U22 (compare the Outkitel U22 ) got a separate GPU which is a major advantage but probably also necessary with Android 7.0. It does only support 3G.

Leagoo M7

Antutu Score: 18.700

Also an Android 7.0 model from 5.5″ with an HD screen. It has dual sim support and only for 2G and 3G. The system has a separate Mali-400 GPU and a 3000mAH battery. The screen is from Asahi Glass (the largest glass manufacturer in the world). The cameras are the same quality as the U22 and the Excite. Compare the prices for the Leagoo M7 .

Doogee X9

Antutu Score: 21.200

The X9 got Android 6.0 installed with a size of 5.5 inch. It does not have a GPU (like the Cloudfone) and offers dual sim. The cameras are from the same quality (Front: 5MP, BackL 8MP) and the battery got an capacity of 3000mAh. The Doogee X9 supports 3G. The Pro version, which is slighlty more expensive supports 4G a major advantage.

Our Experience

When discussing the specifications there are certainly some elements which can better. But that is not reasonable with a budget phone like this. There are some features we want to inform more about.

The camera is not the best part of the model, it has only 8 MP for the primary camera. So it is possible to take pictures but do not expect too much. The next thing we noticed is the screen; it seems a bit dark. When increasing the brightness this will be gone, but you need to put it around 70% or more in an indoors environment. Reading your screen outside on a sunny day will be harder.

We are a bit disappointed about the installed Android version, Lollipop is working like expected and performs fine. Though, according to security, it is better to get a later version. Other smartphones from same price category have at least Android 6.0 installed.

So Should You Buy It?

The AnTuTu score about performance don’t lie to us. The Cloudfone Excite Prime is scoring great against the same price range models. Which is a bit confusing because those mostly offer a slightly better CPU with an extra GPU. However, the down point of the Android 5 OS is an advantage when measuring performance.

Afterall you will get a real decent value for only $66 bucks, you cannot expect high-end specs for prices like this.

You can find the Cloudfone Exicte Prime directly at CNdirect for at the time of writing $66 dollar. Like we mentioned earlier, no other Chinese shops are offering this model.
