Chinese Smartphone Brands

Everyone knows the big mobile phone brands like; Samsung, Nokia, Apple, Sony Ericsson, HTC, Blackberry, Motorola and LG. They make qualitative good phones, with the newest technology. So it is pretty common that those ‘top’ phones cost a ton of money.

However companies like Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo are catching up. They are already in the top 10 of manufacturing mobile phone brands. And the best part of it, their phones are far better priced with almost the same specifications as the worldwide known brands.

The Chinese phone brands are gaining recognition and raising the ladder. Within front Huawei but not far behind we have brands like: Xiaomi, JiaYU, Zopo, Oppo and Cubot. They manifacture from Shenzhen and Dongguan, two southern Chinese provinces in which the country’s OEM businesses are commonly located. Ther are some local mobile phone makers over the past few years have built up manufacturing lines with excessive production capacity. (

Further in this article a small overview of each brand, with some background information, the current top models and future plans.



Huawei was founded by Ren Zhengfei in 1987. It is a Chinese networking and telecommunications company which has a lot more to offer then mobile phones. But the larger population know them about their phones and we will stick with that, they recently overtaken Ericsson in 2012. Huwawei is the brand which is catching up fast, they are selling the most mobile phones worldwide behind Apple and Samsung. Since fall 2013 they are focusing more on western countries, however in China they are already a very well-known.

Top Models: Ascend P6, Ascend Mate

The new version of this top model will come soon (in China it is already released: Ascend P6 S). The thinnest smartphone on the planet and you certainly feel that when using. The competitor against the Samsung S3/4 with a far more reasonable price.

With his 6,1″ inch screen it can be recognized as a phablet.
Emotion UI or Miui interface
The onw skin of Huawei, Emotion UI which is looks exactly on Miui. The Chinese firmware which is used on a number of mobile phones and standard on the Xiaomi models (which we will discuss later). Most important feature of the interface is that there are only home screens, every application on the phone will be viewable on the home screen.



Maybe you did not know but ZTE is the world’s fourth-largest mobile phone manufacturer in 2012. With 89,786 employees (See annuel report 2011).

Famous Models: ZTE Blade, ZTE Open

ZTE Blade

The ZTE Blade, a smartphone for just around $100, Sold more than a million times in Europe. At the moment there are various Blade types on the market with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwhich or higher versions.

ZTE Open

A mobile phone with the Firefox OS. This OS is HTML 5 based and therefore it is easy for developers to make web apps. So twitter, Bing, Pinterest, Wikipedia and Facebook are standard on every Mozilla Firefox OS phone. The phone is cleary a price fighter versus the more expensive Android and iOS phones.

And of course the ZTE flagship, the Nubia 5.

Future Thoughts

ZTE is introducing it’s first smart watch, the BlueWatch. It enables on wrist control for calls, content, social and photos. Besides the wathc ZTE is making the Iconic Phablet, which can view two applications at the same time on the screen.



One of the youngest Chinese companies (2010) which can compete with the big ones, and wow, they can certainly keep up with the real deal. They design, develop and sell smartphones but also apps. The most recognizable feature is the Miui operations system which also being used or copied by other Chinese brands like Huawei. The system is based on android but is has a slightly different feel than we are used to with the ‘normal’ brands.

Top Models: MI2 and MI3

It took 3 minutes to sell 50.000 copies of the MI2 back in October 2012. So that’s how popular Xiaomi is in their home country China, we are of course awaiting their transition to the other world countries. Even Steve Wozniak (the man behind Apple, next to Steve Jobs) uses the Xiaomi Mi3 smartphone.
The smartphone has been so well received because of its reasonable size with a more than good screen, this together with the ability to tweak with the software it is an outstanding and surprisingly fun phone. Maybe somewhat more for the experts but still a great deal.
In September 2013, Xiaomi announced the MI3, this one gets a bigger screen 5” and is powered with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.
