Do 4K actions cameras for this price exist? Today we will test another affordable action camera from China, the Andoer AN5000 for just around $60 you will get a complete set of accessories and a hopeful camera. How does this one stand out versus the more expensive ones? We researched many online reviews, tested it ourselves, dug deep into the specifications and in the end will show you the lowest price on the internet.

Why should you consider the Andoer AN5000?

You will find everything you need in the Andoer Box, which looks cool. There is no other brand with a similar box like this, and it is convenient for traveling! To much to mention in this box. You don’t need to look any further for accessories because everything is available. Expect the memory card is missing, which is required for using the AN5000. All accessories and mounts look sophisticated and durable.

The camera got many available features, us it as a Car DVR (Loop Recording), or use the Motion Sensor option when using as a home security camera. The Andoer has a lens range of 170° degrees, but it can be adjusted to 140°, 110°, 70° if you want.

Besides these main options there are also many picture color, white balance or scene settings to adjust to your whishes. Like Daylight / Cloudy / Tungsten / Fluorescent or Night Scene / Portrait / Lightpainting. It includes a self-timer or an option to for burst pictures. And there is a timelapse feature, which records in 100ms/200ms/500ms/1s/5s.

Next to that it offers a great Anti-Shake / Gyroscope feature, we did not test it ourselves, but in the video, at the end of the review, someone is testing it. According to this examination, it works great. The rest of that video is also worth watching!

Video Resolution

The AN5000 uses the same Chipset as the SJCAM M10 and M20, SJ6 Legend and SJ5000X. Novatek NTK96660 Chipset, a well-known chipset. Many try to compare the Novatek Chipsets with the Ambarella chipsets which are used by GoPro. However, it is not a real comparison because bot chips work differently and have their own pro’s and cons (for the geeks: It’s like comparing ARM chips with Intel chips).

The Andoer AN5000 can handle the following video resolutions: UHD P24(2880 * 2160) (interpolation), QHD P30(2560 * 1440), FHD P60/30(1920 * 1080), HD P120/60/30(1280 * 720), WVGA P30(848 * 480), VGA.

But in the end, the camera does not produce real 4K videos. Just like many other Chinese actions cams which claim to do so. The Andoer AN5000 is honest though; they explain that the highest resolution is reached with “interpolation.” So the camera will create that resolution by changing a lower resolution digital to a higher one. This is not something to be ashamed of, especially not for this price. But it is important to know the difference.

How to Recognize Fake 4k Cameras?

It is not a 100% reliable method, but easy to use in practice. Action cameras which offer native 4K video with around 30fps will also offer 1080p with 120fps. You should use this rule of thumb because action cameras which are offering fake 4k video (interpolated), mostly offer max. 60fps on their 1080p video. So therefore also checkout there 1080p HD video resolution. Read more about how to recognize a fake action cam.

Image Resolution

According to the specs this action cam can produce 20MP pictures. Which is not true (much of the same like the earlier video resolution), the Sony IMX078 1/2.3″ sensor is capable of producing max 12MP pictures. Therefore the 20M (5120 * 3840) and 16M (4608 * 3456) are created with digital features. Although the lens range is 170° degrees, which is a pretty nice feature.

Waterproof Housing

We paid special attention to the waterproof housing. The housing fit’s the Andoer AN5000 perfectly, but because the AN5000 is somewhat smaller, my SJCAM does not fit. This is also the case with the buttons on the housing. In this case, there are only four buttons to control the AN5000 underwater. It is stated to be able to keep waterproof for 30 meters.

The clip to close the housing is easy to use. However, when looking at the closing mechanism and comparing it to the SJCAM housing (which was a lot harder to open), it seems a little less enduring. It will last in underwater but maybe after a while of opening and closing the clip it must prove itself?

Andoer Brand

First about Andoer, a brand from China which is rather unknown against the fierce competition like SJCAM, Amkov, MGcool, Elephone, Soocoo, Hawkeye, Yi, and Xiaomi and those are only their Chinese counterparts.

The Andoer trademark is registered by TomTop Shenzen. For that reason, we will only find these cameras at TomTop or Camfere. Besides action cameras, Andoer is specialized in Tripods, Video Accessories, and Lightning accessories. Their products are on the market since 2016, so the company is pretty novice in the market. However they do mention something else: “In recent years, Andoer has gained increasing popularity.”

The camera itself feels a bit fragile because of the plastic material. Compared with my old SJCAM 5000 which has some rubber kind feeling (which felt far more solid). It is available in three different colors: white, gray and black. We tested the latter color.

The front of the camera has a 170-degree wide angle lens and a power/mode button on the front side. The rear aspect of the camera got an 2 inch LCD screen (no touch), and two LED lights in lower left the corner. These tell you when the camera is on (blue) and when the camera is charging (red). Blinking blue means that the camera is recording.

On the back of the camera is a 2-inch color display with two status LEDs in the lower left corner. The top LED blinks red while the camera’s battery is charging and the LED below it lights up in blue with the camera is powered on and blinks blue while the camera is recording video.

At the left side of the AN5000, you’ll find a micro SD card slot that can accommodate up to a 64GB memory card. There’s also a micro-USB connector that is used to charge the camera. You will also find an HD out connection for the possibility to connect it to your TV. Note that the Andoer camera does not come with a micro HDMI cable. The built-in microphone is also on this side of the cam.

On the right side of the camera, you’ll find the up/down buttons that are used to navigate through menus. The speaker is also at this side which tells you some information about: “Start recording,” “Stop Recording,” “Motion Detected,” or “Low Battery.”

The top side got an “OK” button which is used to select menu items. At the bottom of the camera is the battery slot. The Andoer AN5000 has a replaceable 900mAh battery which is handy if you do a lot of video capture and have multiple batteries on hand.

The camera’s user interface is very basic, it just got four main buttons to control it. Hold down the front power button to boot it up. This will take approx 15 seconds when you are ready to shoot some shots.

Press the button at the top to immediately start recording. If you want to switch modes or adjust the settings press the front power button once. You will get from video mode to image mode, slow-motion capture, playback and as last the settings mode.

Regardless of the capture mode that you might be in, the ok button on the top of the camera will start the capture. If it’s video mode, it will start recording and if in photo capture mode, it will snap an image. To stop recording, you just press the ok button a second time.

As mentioned earlier the AN5000 offers many features. Navigating goes with the back and forward buttons on the right side. Selecting an option with the “ok” button and the power button is used for getting back in this case.

At first, the suggested “CamKing” App does not exist in the play store. Therefore, we just downloaded the Andoer Actioncam app for Android in the Play store. The app works fine. However, it is not that extensive, even with its size of about 70mb. One small annoying part is that when you leave the app, you will have to connect again.

Difference between Andoer Action Cam Models

We compared the AN7000 and AN8000 with the AN5000. There are a few major differences which are nice to mention. There are differences for:

  • CPU Chip
  • CMOS Sensor
  • Lens Width
  • Video Resolution -> Read below why those are often not true
  • Wifi/ Bluetooth
  • Deliverd with Remote Control
  • Anti Shake / Gyroscope Feature

In the end, we think that the Andoer AN5000 is worth the price value. You will not get a 4K action cam, but that’s impossible. What you get are all the accessories you need in a nice hard case. Many options to use the camera in different ways and those options work great.

  • Time Lapse/Stop Motion/Gyro/Anti Shake
  • Price (Affordable)
  • Comprehensive Package of Accessories (Hard Case Box)
